THAILAND’S BCG TRANSFORMATION

In research and knowledge sharing, collaborating with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, funded by the National Research Council of Thailand, we published the book, “Thailand’s BCG Transformation: 40 Case Studies on the Bio-Circular-Green Strategy and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy in Action,” in honor of Thailand hosting the meetings for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2022.

The book is based on a 2-year research of compiling various cases of best practice in the development and implementation of the BCG model with 'Sufficiency Economy' as a foundation. The book has been distributed to the Cabinet, the Privy Council, and foreign dignitaries via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to create understanding and inspiration in the pursuit of cooperation in BCG development, leading to expanding its results in a broader way, while serving as a framework for cooperation both within and between countries.

Thailand’s BCG Transformation: 40 Case Studies on the Bio-Circular-Green Strategy and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy in Action is a Living Case Book resulting from research of studying and compiling various cases of best practice in the development and implementation of economic activities according to the BCG economic model with 'Sufficiency Economy' as a foundation. The story of each case will create understanding and inspiration in the pursuit of cooperation in BCG economic development, leading to expanding its results in a broader way, while serving as a framework for cooperation between relevant sectors both within and between countries. The method of collecting qualitative data was mainly used in the field. It started with a selection of case studies that highlighted diversity and connected to the BCG economy in 4 target industries: namely Agriculture and Food, Health and Medicine, Energy and Biomaterials, and Tourism and Creative Economy.

The cases cover both outstanding and successful projects, including projects that have an interesting story or are likely to be successful in the future. The case studies are compiled into a database, and written into the articles in English, presented by region of Thailand: the North, the Central, the East and the West, Northeastern and Southern regions.

Furthermore, the book has additional content 8 on topics under the BCG strategy that covering several regions: (1) Digitalization and the Agricultural Sector; (2) Khok Nong Na Model: A Solution for Smallholder Farmers; (3) Returning Value to Forests; (4) Sustainable Fishing; (4) Moving up Manufacturing Chain; (5) Clean Energy Pathways; (6) The Way to Wellbeing: Healthcare Strategies; (8) Thai Tourism: Ready to Rebound. Each case study consists of content that conveys the way of thinking and how to operate, important turning point in the step-by-step development, key success factors, issues, and challenges in each region of the country and possible further development opportunities.

Each case is elaborated connecting with the BCG in action and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. In addition, the discussion includes how the case can develop social immunity and promote sustainable ecological growth; with inspiring photos and illuminating infographic. All to present that development based on BCG and sufficiency economy philosophy will bring 'balance' and ‘security’ to the world today and “sustainability” in the future.
